South Africa re-emerged at a time where Australia held the Rugby World Cup, and the state of competition between the two countries has generally been a lot tighter in the years since isolation ended, than it was in the period before apartheid South Africa was shunned.

Australia have competed in all six Rugby World Cups, and have won the World Cup on two occasions, in 1991 against England, and in 1999 against France.
